presos nos Estados Unidos (Burd e cols., 2003 e 2004). Mesmo considerando uma
incidência conservadora, estes números estão subestimados, refletindo a dificuldade de se
diagnosticar uma síndrome como esta com tamanha interação social e influência ambiental.
Mesmo assim, indivíduos com SAF apresentam características similares na maioria
dos estudos realizados: crescimento e desenvolvimento divergente, dismorfologia
equivalente e baixa performance intelectual (May e cols., 2000).
Nos últimos trinta e poucos anos o conhecimento desta síndrome mudou:
anteriormente a Síndrome do Álcool Fetal era considerada como uma possível
conseqüência do consumo crônico de álcool. Esta opinião agora abrange um padrão de
consumo muito mais amplo. Evidências de estudos com animais e em humanos confirmam
que mudanças comportamentais podem ocorrer mesmo em dosagens de consumo mais
baixas. Desta forma, o álcool é considerado um teratógeno tanto físico quanto
comportamental (Mukherjee e cols., 2005).
Com os resultados apresentados observamos que os sinais característicos da SAF
estavam presentes nos controles e menos evidentes nos probandos. Contudo, estes últimos
tiveram exposições ambientais de maior impacto que provavelmente se obscureceram as
características físicas resultantes da exposição pré-natal ao álcool. Era de se esperar que
tanto a exposição pré-natal ao álcool quanto a um ambiente pós-natal adverso tivesse
impacto na performance cognitiva e no comportamento. Flores (2004) afirma que as
diferenças nas condições ambientais a que um indivíduo pode ser exposto nos primeiros
anos de vida, no Brasil, são tão drásticas que suplantam as diferenças genéticas que possam
existir. Ou seja, não podemos afirmar que os sinais clínicos de SAF são mais freqüentes
entre os controles, mas sim que, nos probandos, a etiologia criminal sofre mais a influência
das condições ambientais adversas.
Assim, nos seus aspectos mais amplos o que os dados sugerem? Algo que já havia
sido identificado, há mais de uma década, para a população norte americana. A pobreza é,
sem dúvida, um fator de risco ambiental não só para violência como também para a morte
puerperal, lesões acidentais, queimaduras, infecções respiratórias, abandono escolar,
gestação na adolescência e, a perpétua permanência em situação de pobreza (Kliegman,
1992). As desigualdades sociais se refletem na exposição a fatores tóxicos na gestação, a
más condições de alimentação, ausência de cuidados pré-natais e outros problemas de
saúde. A desigualdade social, no Brasil, além de muitos problemas, faz mal para os bebês.
